Jan. 23, 2017: Monday

Welcome to a shorter week that leads into the Chinese New Year Holidays.

We had Assembly to begin the day and the Grade 5 class had a nice presentation on Fortitude with a nice lesson to learn. They showed how birds never give up even if things don't go their way, and that we should do the same.

After Assembly we had a quiz on Yonder Mountain and then read some of Chapter nine in Frindle. Nick's principal came to his house to have a little chat with his parents.

In Math the students used different ways to divide by 10, and also practiced more problem solving.

Describing how the pony express improved communication long ago was our objective in Social Studies.

Finally, in Science we reviewed last week's class and began a new unit on People and Resources by identifying different natural resources. Students worked in groups to brainstorm the ways they use resources every day.

Jan. 20, 2017: Friday

The end of week 4 has come to an end, and next week is a short week. Please read below for more information on Chinese New Year activities.

In Language Arts we began with a spelling test and then read Frindle. Here's a quick summary of Chapter 8 - Things are getting rather serious in the school and all the students don't care about getting after school detention if they say the word, "Frindle." It has begun to cause a lot of problems throughout the school, but all the students continue to say, "Frindle" instead of "pen."

During Math, the students had practice deciding what operation to use for problem solving, and they practiced dividing by 5.

Science class was dedicated to a quiz.

We had some students get a prize for completing their Reading Logs. Other students are very close to getting their prize. Keep going, students!

         a) What is a frindle and where did the word come from?
         b) Predict what will happen with this new word?
         c) What does Mrs. Granger think of this new word? Do you think she will want it in the dictionary. Explain.

Jan. 19, 2017: Thursday

It was a busy day in the Talented Third Graders' classroom working in small groups, discussing and sharing ideas. 

Language Arts/Reading -  After reading Chapter 6 in Frindle, the students developed the setting and characters for their story. We also practiced using some contractions, along with when to use a, an, the.

Social Studies - We had some good discussions about moving to other places gave reasons why people immigrate to new lands.

Math - The students used arrays to relate multiplication and division, and practiced dividing by 2.

Jan. 18, 2017: Wednesday

Today marks one week away from Chinese New Year, and we have lots to get through before then. 

This morning in Language Arts/Reading, the students chose an idea for the story they will begin to write, used positive and negative words, and wrote sentences with adjectives. 

 

In Science, we reviewed the glacier investigation and reviewed for Friday's quiz.

Jan. 17, 2017: Tuesday

On our typical Tuesday, the students were hard at work............

• Language Arts/Reading - recognize the parts of a story (students will soon be writing a story), named the characters as a Cafe menu strategy, used adjectives 'much' and 'many'
• Math - used repeated subtraction to find quotients
• Science - explained how fast land changes affect living things
• Social Studies - the students chose this class to use as their computer time. They achieved their goal of 95% positive Dojo points in Q2. Great job students, and keep it up. You deserved some free time for your wonderful behavior

Jan. 16, 2017: Monday

I hope everybody had a great weekend and stayed warm.

This morning after assembly, the students wrote a short quiz on Frindle. We then read Yonder Mountain and reviewed vocabulary and answered comprehension questions.

During Math, we reviewed the multiplication quiz and began the new chapter on division. Today the students used models to explore two ways to divide.

It is a very special day for one student - Dennis. Happy 10th Birthday, Dennis!  We all got treated with a pizza party for his birthday. Thank you so much for sharing.

 

In Social Studies, the students recognized the kinds of transportation people used in the 1800's.

Finally, the students explained how different fast land changes (earthquake, volcano, flood) affect living things in Science class.

Jan. 13, 2017: Friday

It's Friday the 13th................

We began the day with a spelling test, followed by some reading of Frindle, and then some review to prepare for the quiz on Chapters 1-5 on Monday.

During Science, the students modeled a glacier to show how erosion can happen.

      

The students completed a quiz on multiplication in Math. Next week we will move on to division.
