Jan. 12, 2017: Thursday

Two weeks away from our Chinese New Year Festival and the students look great in their performance practice.

In the classroom this morning, the students edited and revised their holiday personal narratives, finished reading Yonder Mountain, and used "how many" adjectives.

In the afternoon, the students presented their research on a famous explorer for Social Studies. During Math, we found patterns and multiplied three numbers. We also did a quick review for the quiz tomorrow.

  

HOMEWORK:
1) Personal Narrative - please make your good copy in your Work on Writing notebook. Feel free to add more adjectives or make any necessary changes that you feel can make your story better.
2) Reading Log - it was awesome to see every one complete their log last night. Keep it up!

NOTICES:
- tomorrow: short Math quiz on multiplication and a spelling test
- it's casual Friday tomorrow. Please wear your PE clothes and a change of appropriate casual clothes if you want

Jan. 11, 2017: Wednesday

Welcome to wonderful Wednesday. It was a little quieter in the homeroom today as the students had more specialty classes.

In Language Arts/Reading the students wrote a conclusion to their holiday personal narrative, used more, exciting adjectives in sentences, and we got through half a chapter of Frindle.

Secret message of the day: lion dance

In Science we reviewed erosion and weathering and completed a small experiment and witnessed how erosion and weathering works in the garden.

2) LA - Spelling Questions - please choose the other 8 spelling words and write a question of at least seven words long

NOTICES:
- please hand in your final exams that have all the corrections completed, and a signature from a parent
- lunch fees can be handed in with the exact dollar amount
- Green House students will have a pizza party on Friday for having the most points after quarter 3

Jan. 10, 2017: Tuesday

The weather and students' behavior continue to be very beautiful. Here's what we did today:

• Language Arts/Reading: read chapter 4 of Frindle, wrote and introduction and body paragraphs to the holiday personal narrative, discovered the many different adjectives we can use in writing
• Math: used strategies, and a hand trick, to multiply when 9 is a factor
• Science: described the effects of erosion
• Social Studies: students worked with a partner and researched famous explorers. They will present their findings tomorrow

    

HOMEWORK:

1) Math p. 60

2) LA - Personal Narrative - please complete your introduction and the other two paragraphs about your holidays (we will work on the conclusion tomorrow). Please remember to write it in your Work on Writing notebook and to double space.
3) complete your Q2 Final Exam corrections and hand them back tomorrow, with a parent signature

Jan. 9, 2017: Monday

Happy Monday everybody!

The morning began with Assembly and it was a special one. Today DISK announced the honor students from each grade. Congratulations to Victoria and Georgia for earning honors in the first semester!



After Assembly we dove into Frindle and read one more chapter. We then learned more vocabulary words from Yonder Mountain and read part of the story.

In Math, the students used strategies to multiply when 7 or 8 is the factor.

Social Studies consisted of recognizing the kinds of transportation people used long ago.

The students observed the effects of weathering in Science.

It was also Rei's birthday yesterday, so we were lucky to celebrate with him and enjoy this lovely cake. Thank you, and the students loved it.

Jan. 6, 2017: Friday

The short week has come to an end an it was nice to get back into the groove of things.

We started Language Arts off with another chapter from Frindle, followed by writing a paragraph for their holiday personal narrative.

In Math, we used strategies to multiply when 6 is a factor. The students got to play some games and complete some problem solving questions.

The students identified and compared different landforms in Science.

1) Science p. 212-214
2) LA - spelling sentences - please choose 8 words and make a sentence that is at least seven words long.

4) Reading Log - I have changed the expectations of the Reading Log slightly - please take a look at the R.E.D. letter

Jan. 5, 2017: Thursday

Well the students are slowly getting back into the groove as we had to practice some writing skills today. They used their holiday journal and made an outline for their holiday personal narrative. We began a novel study on the book, Frindle, and read the first chapter. We began a new Journeys story, Yonder Mountain, and went over some new vocabulary words.

In Social Studies, we reviewed the final exam and explained how people can change other people's lives. 

We continued on with multiplying in Math and practiced using a multiplication table and how to multiply when 3 is a factor. 

ECA - students will be using ECA time to practice for the Chinese New Year performance on January 26.

January 4, 2017: Wednesday

It was a nice winter break and a well deserved rest for all. At the same time, it was wonderful to see all the students again. I can notice how some of the students grew taller over the 2 week break.

This morning we chatted about our winter holidays and each student presented what they did.

    

Each classroom has been issued a Chromebook (kind of like a laptop), and over the next semester, the students will have a chance to use this Chromebook for various reasons.

The students were introduced to a new app called "Epic Books" that we will be using in the classroom. This app is good for reading books, or having them read to the students. We chose a "Knock Knock" book on Epic today and had some laughs.

Later in the day we had Science. After reviewing the final project, we dove into the next unit on Changes to the Earth's Surface. We identified and compared different landforms and discussed the layers of Earth.

ECA was Chinese New Year themed and we watched a couple of videos to learn about the Nian Monster and some traditions. It's the Year of the Rooster soon!

HOMEWORK:

1) please bring all your textbooks, workbooks, notebooks back to school (Library books will be exchanged on Monday)

2) Read for 10 minutes, however, you do not need to hand in your Reading log this week.

NOTICES:

- The Reading Log program will change slightly. I will attach a letter by the end of the week outlining the changes.

- Electives will begin next Friday, January 13.
