Jan. 25, 2017: Wednesday

It was rehearsal day and all the students from each grade looked fantastic. They will put on an amazing show tomorrow during the Chinese New Year performance that begins at 2:30pm sharp.

This morning we had just enough time to read some of the "Freedom of Press" chapter in Frindle. It's great to see the students so involved in this book. (They were even clapping to an event in the story the other day.)

After reading Frindle, the students had the Chinese New Year performance festival, followed by PE and Art. At the end of rehearsal, the Chinese New word game winners was announced and the Talented Third Graders came in second place and received a red envelope each. Great job on finding all those words!

The students were finally in the homeroom for Science in which they identified types of pollution and explained the importance of conserving natural resources.

HOMEWORK:
1) Reading worksheet - while reading a book tonight, write down a word that you don't know on the worksheet and complete the rest of the parts

Jan. 24, 2017: Tuesday

We had a fun day in the homeroom today that began with our student from Wenzao leading a Chinese New Year craft in Language Arts. Miss Emma had a rooster cutting craft that the students really enjoyed doing. Great job, kids!

In Reading, we managed to finish yesterday's chapter in Frindle. Nick's parents are on his side and will not do anything to help stop this "frindle" business.

During Math, the students used special rules to divide by 0 or 1. We have now completed the first division chapter and will have a quiz when we return after the Chinese New Year break.

The students had the chance to explain how improvements in communication changed people's lives in Social Studies. They also got to spell their name in Morse Code.

For Science, the students distinguished between renewable and nonrenewable resources.

Jan. 23, 2017: Monday

Welcome to a shorter week that leads into the Chinese New Year Holidays.

We had Assembly to begin the day and the Grade 5 class had a nice presentation on Fortitude with a nice lesson to learn. They showed how birds never give up even if things don't go their way, and that we should do the same.

After Assembly we had a quiz on Yonder Mountain and then read some of Chapter nine in Frindle. Nick's principal came to his house to have a little chat with his parents.

In Math the students used different ways to divide by 10, and also practiced more problem solving.

Describing how the pony express improved communication long ago was our objective in Social Studies.

Finally, in Science we reviewed last week's class and began a new unit on People and Resources by identifying different natural resources. Students worked in groups to brainstorm the ways they use resources every day.

HOMEWORK:
1) Math p. 71
2) LA - spelling sentences - please choose 8 spelling words and write a sentence for each word
3) Reading Logs

NOTICES:

- Thursday is Chinese New Year activities, Mass, and Chinese New Year festival. Parents can arrive for Mass at 1:15pm, or the start of the Festival which will begin at 2:30pm.
