Feb. 24, 2017: Friday

The week has come to an end and now a 4 day long weekend lies ahead of us.

This morning the students shared their weekend plans, and then we had the spelling test. The students also practiced reading with expression.

In Math, we continued to practice telling time to five minutes. The students created a clock in their interactive notebooks.

After lunch, the students explained how water can be found in different states. We also checked out the evaporation experiment and found that fresh water evaporates quicker than salt water.

The school enjoyed watching Zootopia in the Student Council lead movie day. Thanks to the Student Council for organizing the movie day.

Feb. 23, 2017: Thursday

This morning we had another beautiful mass and the Grade 2 class was the sponsor.

After Mass we had some time before recess, so it was storytelling time. This time Ahmrae had to tell a story about being home alone for a week, and Dennis' story had to be about a girl named Amy. Good creativity by the storytellers, and great listening skills from the audience.

In the afternoon, we had Social Studies and Math.

For Social Studies, we saw how culture can be communicated through arts and dancing. We watched videos from different cultures (dances, paintings).

In Math, we reviewed the basics of telling time, and then practiced telling time to 5 minutes.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. It sure felt like summer outside today.

We began the day with the morning Assembly and watched Grade 2 present RESPECT. They did a wonderful job.

After Assembly, the Talented Third Graders shared what activities they did on the weekend, followed by a phonics lesson on the letters -au. We then reviewed Frindle to prepare for tomorrow's quiz.

In Math, we reviewed the division quiz and began the new unit on time. The students got to tell time to the hour and half hour.

In Social Studies, the students worked in small groups to think about the recreational activities cultures do in warm and cold climates. They also made a picture to go with it.

Measuring weather using different tools was the objective in Science. We went outside and measured weather to begin a couple week long observation experiment.

Feb. 16, 2017: Thursday

Here are what our objectives were for today:
  • Language Arts/Reading - discuss revision/editing strategies for story writing, wrote adverbs that tell "where", and it was storytelling time. Today Josh had to tell a story about a giant penguin and Stetson had to share a story about being invisible. Great job was done by both!

  • Social Studies - gave examples of how cultures are different
  • Math - reviewed division for the quiz tomorrow
  • ECA - we had a little computer lesson where I showed the students how to attach a document into an email, and how to write something in Word. They should be more prepared for their Language Arts assignment now.
HOMEWORK:
1) Social Studies - please create your own culture (you can pretend you live in a new country) and share your culture. Please give an example for each of the following: food, language (write the word for "Hello"), clothing, and holidays. Remember, this is not for a Taiwanese culture, it's for your own made-up culture, so have fun with it, but try to be realistic. Also, please draw a family portrait showing some of these cultural beliefs.

2) Language Arts - choose 6 spelling words and write a sentence for each word, and include an adverb in each sentence. Ex: My dad walked to the kitchen carefully.

3) Reading Logs

4) Language Arts - Story writing - good copy. As a reminder, you need to take your time to revise and edit your story. It will take some time, so please follow the suggestions I wrote in your notebook and you can work on it a little bit at a time. Be sure to proofread it a few times. You will email your good copy to me by Wednesday, Feb. 22 at: eyaremchuk@diskg.net

NOTICES:
- spelling test and math quiz tomorrow
- Secret message - Thank you
- tickets for the movie day are on sale, please bring your $60NT to buy your entry
- PE tomorrow, please wear your house shirts

Have a great evening!

Mr. Y

Feb. 15, 2017: Wednesday

Once again, Wednesday proves to be a quieter time in the classroom, and today was no different.

In Language Arts/Reading, we played around with rhyming words and then used them to make some couplet poems. After that, the students put some dictionary skills to use, and then practiced using "when" and "how" adverbs in sentences.

For Science the students wrote a quiz, and finally presented their conservation posters. Well done on the posters, students!

The students had an activity with Sister Jean during ECA as the teachers had their monthly professional development meeting.

HOMEWORK:
1) Frindle Questions - Please write the questions in your notebook and answer them in complete sentences:
        - What was your favorite part of the book?  Why is it your favorite?
        - Did you like the book? Why or why not?
        - How would you change the ending of the story?
        - Is it fair that Nick makes money off his idea? How about Bud Lawrence?
        - If you were Nick, what would you do with all that money when you turned 21 years old?

2) LA - good copy of your story is due on Wednesday, February 22. There will be a late penalty if it is not handed in by then. Your good copy is to be typed on the computer, preferably in Microsoft Word. Please double space your good copy, and use 14 size font. If you do not have Word, you can write it as an email message. Please email your good copy to: eyaremchuk@diskg.net
We will go over how to email and add your story to the email in class.

3) Reading logs
