Sept. 13, 2016

Well, we are already halfway through the school week. Unless of course we get a typhoon day, then it was an extra short week.

During our busy Tuesday, we started with Mass. Here are a couple of our students in the choir.

After Mass we reviewed the concepts learned with money in Math and practiced playing with money in games and one-on-one work.

In Social Studies we described how different regions can affect our lives. This also involved a review of the landforms and bodies of water by playing a pictionary game.

The students continued their tower building in Science and ECA.

HOMEWORK:
1) Social Studies p. 51
2) Science p. 88
3) Reading Logs (students have taken home a class book to assist with their Reading Log, and they also got a worksheet they can complete for Monday - do not have to read the whole book)

NOTICES:
- tomorrow could be a typhoon day, so please stay safe, and hope that everyone in Taiwan is ok
- Journeys quiz on The Trial Of Cardigan Jones will be on Tuesday (study the vocabulary)

Have a wonderful Moon Festival Holiday and enjoy your BBQs! Safe travels if you are going anywhere.

Sept. 12, 2016

Well that was one beautiful weekend, and I hope you all had a great one.

Assembly was the first item on today's agenda. We had two more students share the Angel of the Week award: Emma in Grade 5 and Vivian in Grade 1.

In Reading and Phonics, we worked on our new spelling words and then in small groups to tell the different parts of "The Trial of Cardigan Jones."

Math consisted of rounding numbers to the nearest dollar or ten dollar. REMEMBER: the cents will always be zero (0) when rounding money to the nearest dollar or ten dollar.

We identified and described physical features on Earth with a focus on landforms and bodies of water. The students had to make some physical features with PlayDoh.

Finally, Science and ECA was full of designing and building. We have started our final Unit project (instead of a unit test). The students had to plan and design a tower that will be made out of straws and tape. It has to be a minimum of 30cm tall and the goal is to have the tower hold books on the top. They are given scissors, tape, and 65 straws. They were off to a great start today!

HOMEWORK:
1) Math p. 17
2) Science p. 85
3) Reading Logs - please not that I will not give a percentage mark for this week, and rather just a Dojo point for each night the Reading Log was completed.

NOTICES:
- there is a typhoon nearing Taiwan, and we will keep a close eye on it as it could arrive on Wednesday.
- no spelling test this week, the new words are for September 23

Have a great evening!

Mr. Y

Sept. 9, 2016

It was a beautiful day to kick off the weekend!

The student's brains began working with the spelling test to start the morning. We followed that with Listen to Reading as I read another chapter from our novel study of The Wizard of Oz.

The students compared amounts of money and found equivalent amounts using different coins.

In Science, the unit exam was introduced to the students. They will be working with a partner to design and build a tower made of only straws and tape. This tower will have to hold some books. The students made their tower plans and they will begin building the tower on Monday.

NEW SPELLING WORDS (for Sept. 23):
become, predicate, English, eraser, ocean, because, pointed, question, mountain, subject, glacier, island

HOMEWORK:
1) Reading Log
2) Math notebook - please pull out 3 coins, count the amount and write it down, and then pull out 3 more coins, count the amount, and write it down. Please compare the 2 amounts and tell if it is greater than, less than, or equal to. Ex: $0.65 < $0.87   (you can also choose to pull out more than 3 coins)
3) Reading - Cafe Menu Worksheet - please answer the questions from the reading you heard in class from Wizard of Oz

NOTICES:

- a newsletter was handed out to the students today, please take the time to read the important information

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Sept. 5, 2016

Today is the first Monday of September, and the weather is already starting to feel slightly less hot.

Our Talented Third Graders will be the readers this week for morning and lunch prayers. Ahmrae and Sophie were the first to read at Assembly. Great job girls!

For Reading class, the students completed their Daily 5 duties before learning some new vocabulary words from the new Journeys story, "The Trial of Cardigan Jones."

Naming and counting coins and bills was the objective in Math, and Social Studies the students had a quiz.

Science was a lot of fun as the students used the design process to make a catapult. They made a plan, tested, redesigned, measured, and then communicated the results. The catapult that launched the eraser the farthest belonged to the Blue Penguins. Great job from everybody and it was a close competition. Awesome work students!

Planning and Designing Stage:

Test and Improve, and Redesign Phase:

 Final Test Phase:

HOMEWORK:
1) Language Arts - please choose 6 new spelling words to write a sentence or question with. Each sentence must be at least 6 words long.
2) Math - complete the table in your notebook - use the bag of coins, close your eyes, take out 5 coins and write down what coins you pulled out. Then count the total dollar amount of the coins. Please do this 5 times. For a challenge, you can pull out more coins if you want.
3) Reading Logs

NOTICES:
- English quiz tomorrow on Unit 1 - please know statements, questions, exclamations, commands, subjects, predicates, and how to correct run-on sentences.
