STUDY GUIDES


Math Exam will be on Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Here are the main points of what you should study:

Chapter 1
1)    Place value – ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands (standard, expanded, and word form)
2)   Finding a number pattern

Chapter 2
 1) Comparing numbers – greater than, less than, equal to
                           2) Putting numbers in order – greatest to least, least to greatest                                      3) Rounding – to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand
                                4) Read a bar graph

Chapter 3
                          1) Counting coins and bills – (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar bill)
                          2) Make change – count up to 100 when making change
                           3) Compare money amounts – greater than, less than, equal to
                          4)  Rounding money

Chapter 4
                               1) Addition properties – commutative, zero, and associative properties
                               2) Regroup ones and tens
                               3) Guessing and checking – use strategies to solve problems
                               4) Column addition
                               5)  Adding greater numbers

**There will be problem solving questions from every chapter. Please remember the steps to take when solving a problem. 





Language Arts Exam will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Here are the main points of what you should study:

Unit 1 – The Sentence
    Types of sentences (exclamation, question, command, statement), and the end marks for each one (period, exclamation, question mark).

     Be able to identify the subject and predicate of sentences.

     How to correct run-on sentences.

Unit 2 - Nouns

      1) Common and proper nouns.

      2) Singular and Plural nouns (know the rules of when to add, “-s, -es, or -ies”

      3) Special plural nouns.

      4) Singular and Plural possessive nouns

Writing and Proofreading

     1)   You will need to write a short personal narrative. Please remember how to write a good beginning and ending, and organize your details.

     2)  All spelling words from the spelling tests. You will need to find misspelled words and spell them correctly.




Reading and Phonics 

There will be 2 parts to the Final Exam:
     1)   Written exam on Thursday, October 13, 2016.
     2)  Oral exam throughout exam week – October 6-13, 2016.

   1)  Oral Exam (Reading)
During exam week, you will read a selection and be graded on the strategies we have been learning in the CAFE menu during Daily 5, with a focus on the following:

·        Predict what happens next
·        Connect to the story
·        Name the problem and the solution
·        Recognize the story elements (character, setting, problem)
·        Back up and reread
·        Identify fiction and non-fiction
·        Skip the word and come back to it
·        Name the characters
·        Use the pictures
·        Chunk letters and sounds
I will also use a rubric for how well you read the selection.

    2)  Written Exam Key Points to Study:

-      Vocabulary AND comprehension questions will come from the stories:
a)   A Fine, Fine, School
b)  The Trial of Cardigan Jones
c)   Pop’s Bridge

-      You will also read a short story and answer comprehension questions from that story.





Science Exam will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Here are the main points of what you should study:

Unit 1 – Investigation Questions
Key vocabulary – observe, infer, predict, investigation, experiment, hypothesis, variable, conclusion, model, measure, microscope, temperature, thermometer, length, data, evidence, chart, bar graph, data table, communicate
Also, please remember:  
     - Steps to an investigation, we observe with our 5 senses
     - Different tools are used to measure different things
     - Scientists communicate data

Unit 2 – Engineering Process
Key vocabulary – design process, problem, solution, evaluate, technology
Also, please remember:
    - Steps to the design process
    - Technology has changed through time, and changed society

Unit 3 – Plants and Animals
Key vocabulary – life cycle, germinates, flower, reproduce, cones, pollen, pollination, spores
Also, please remember:
   - Parts of the life cycle and their importance
   - Plants need animals, animals need plants
   - Seeds can be different





Social Studies Exam will be on Wednesday, October 12, 2016

-       Landforms: mountain, hill, plains, plateau, island, glacier
-       Bodies of water: ocean, lake, pond, river, stream
